Innovative Humanities Research
The Humanities Research Center enhances excellence in the humanities within and beyond the university, encourages interdisciplinary exchange and makes visible—locally, nationally and globally—the significance and relevance of humanistic scholarship in the early twenty-first century.
As scholars in the humanities and humanistic social sciences at VCU, we examine the diversity of human experience, thought and culture through many different subjects, such as history, languages and literatures, media, religion, gender studies, philosophy, the visual and performing arts, sociology and political science, and much more. We are committed to critical inquiry, civil discourse, inclusiveness, community exchange and participation, and exposure to a wide variety of perspectives. These are the values that lie at the heart of humanities research and liberal arts education and that are vital to informed and active citizenship.
Opportunities
With support from the VCU Office of Research and Innovation and the College of Humanities and Sciences, the Humanities Research Center is pleased to support VCU faculty at all stages of their career through grants, fellowships, co-sponsorships, and more.
Residential Fellowships
Our annual residential fellowship program gives up to 4-6 faculty members and at least one Ph.D. student release from teaching responsibilities for one semester so they can focus on individual research projects and at the same time engage regularly with each other.
Working Groups
Our interdisciplinary research groups foster conversation and creativity across conventional disciplinary boundaries by bringing together faculty and graduate students from different departments with common interests.
International Collaborations
We partner with international institutions, coming together to foster international, transdisciplinary humanities scholarship across our campuses and across the globe.
