Grants in the Humanities: How to Apply and Get Funded

Co-presented by the CHS Office of Sponsored Programs and the VCU Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, this workshop will discuss how to get funded for your work in the humanities. We will discuss common humanities research funding sources such as the NEH, and how to search the Pivot funding database. Next, we'll cover what to expect when you are preparing a budget and submitting your proposal. We will also share some pointers on how to write a strong proposal, how to think like a reviewer and what to do when you are awarded or declined a grant/fellowship.
Joshua Hahn, MM
Joshua Hahn, MM, is a Senior Grant Development Specialist in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation. Before joining VCU, Joshua worked with nonprofits, including Breakthrough Greater Boston, an educational nonprofit, where he raised over $4 million in institutional funding. He holds a Master of Music from Rice University and a BA in music from Tufts University, with a minor in mathematics. Joshua brings significant grant development and writing expertise to his role, which allows him to serve both campuses on a myriad of federal, state, and foundation opportunities. Some of his focus areas are training grants from NIH and NSF, early investigator-initiated proposals in all disciplines, and grant writing training and workshops. In addition, drawing on his experience in the areas of education, humanities, and the arts, Joshua has a strong foundation to help him foster and support creative cross-campus, multi-discipline collaborations among VCU faculty and researchers at all of our Colleges and Schools. Joshua is also a published music scholar.
Heather Lennon
Heather Lennon is the Director of Sponsored Programs in the College of Humanities and Sciences at VCU. Heather began working at VCU in 2013 in the central Office of Sponsored Programs. Since then, she has also worked in the College of Engineering. As the Director of the CHS SPO Team, Heather assists with grant proposals, post award management, and everything in between. She received her Bachelors at Randolph-Macon College and Masters in History at Virginia Tech.
